You need to read reviews or ask friends and neighbors about the service in your area. It varies and the best people to ask are neighbors as they would be on the same feed. Generally Uverse is supposed to be good but not as good as FIOS.

I made a switch like that, from conventional cable to U-verse and would do it again. The cable companies like to boast of their superior Internet speed, but my Internet performance is actually better than what I had with cable--more reliable. The U-verse DVR is outstanding, and you only need one. And compared to my cable company (Comcast), the customer service is far, far better. My DVR developed a problem recently, and AT&T had a free replacement to me by FedEx the next day.
