Create two expressions from info provided a is larger number; b is smaller. a - b = 25 a = 6b Substitute the second into the first and solve for b 6b - b = 25 b = 5 Which is what you are asked for. From first expression you can see that a = 30 as a check.

x-y = 25 y=1/6x so when you substitute: x-(1/6x) = 25 5/6X = 25 x=150/5 =30 then solve for y: 30-y =25 y=5

Bilbo is right but he didn't go far enough. The larger number is six times the size of the smaller number. So altogether they are 7 times the size of the smaller number. 25 is 7 times the smaller number. So the smaller number is 1/7 of 25 or 25/7. The larger number is 6 times that, or 6/7 * 25.
