Most universities work their Freshman housing this way. If you're grouped together there is a better chance for you to make friends with people at a similar stage of life, going through many of the same programs, learning many of the same things. It's kind of like a built-in support system for people away from home for the first time. You may feel that you wouldn't benefit from it, but perhaps you might be a benefit for someone else in their first year. Freshmen will probably also be offered group meetings for questions and answer sessions, and for socializing, and it's easier to manage this if everybody is housed together. Think of it as good thing for everybody, and you might feel better about it. You'll have your chance at the 'better' housing next year.
