To expand on noraks post, the external would be good for storing saves of games you aren't planning to play for a while. You should invest your money into an internal with a caddy. It is good to note an external drive can communicate with the ps4 but only to the extent of moving data from the external to the internal, any data, such as a save game file, stored on the external can't be accessed from the internal. For example, if you put the save file for a game on the external, then start the game, the game will say yheres no save data, because said save data is on the external not on the internal.

I suggest you get an internal hard drive. Sometimes consoles don't detect hard drives after months of use, unless you take good care of it. You need to select the right hard drive for your ps3.
