If you plug in 3 into the function, you get 0, so 3 is a zero of this polynomial. 8(3)^3-17(3)^2-16(3)-15 = 8*27 - 17*9 - 16*3 - 15 = 216 - 153 - 48 - 15 = 0

In synthetic division, you list the coefficients of the polynomial, then add down and multiply by K. See if this makes sense: 3 | 8 -17 -16 -15 .....0 24 21 15 .....8 7 5 0 (Sorry about the periods, it wouldn't format right) The zero at the end is your remainder, so K is a zero of P(x)! In fact, you can now factor P(x) into (x-3)(8x^2+7x+5)
