The computer it-self is dead, most likely the motherboard. In terms of retrieving your data from your hard drive it is very possible and simple to do. However when you say " not sure if it was the hard drive or me doing something wrong" you haven't't said why you came to this concision. I will explain what you need to do: If your computer recognizes the hard-drive 90% of the time you can get the stuff of of it. When you plug it into your caddy go to 'Computer' or 'My Computer' click the Hard-drive and it will give you a list of files for example, Users or Program files you need to go though every folder to make sure you're not missing anything but start with the folders in Users as most Files & pictures should be in there. If you plug your hard drive into the caddy but you're computer does not recognize it, it could quite possible be that the hard drive is dead BUT try another caddy I would recommend a wired one from!
