I'm wondering if you've considered anything beside either/or. You don't say how old you are or your mother is. That can make a big difference. In this economy, it can be very important to follow your career advancement opportunities. Mom was going to move--is she old enough or disabled to qualify for a senior apartment? There she'd have a lot of company. Does she own the house where you live? Is she still working? Have you considered having Mom move with you? If she has a house to sell, that could buy a duplex where you both could live. If she qualifies for senior living, could that be in the state where you want to live? Unless you really want to repeat her life, find a way to follow your dream and be at peace with your decisions. Start looking for all your options. Gather info and then present the possibilities to Mom. Your brother is going to live his life and should have less input on this. Good luck.
