Someone has to pay. You can of course claim it back on your own insurance perhaps - that is why you have it after all.

There is renter's insurance plans and a great thing to have.

People take out Insurance for this. Do not expect we taxpayers to pay for it. It is your responsibility. It is your home. UK

In your position I would complain to the Local Government Ombudsman. As the damage that occurred was not your fault you shouldn't be paying a penny. The person that is liable is the burglar. If the police can't find him and a court can't order compensation that's not your fault either. Tell the local authority if they don't withdraw their claim you will refer them to the Ombudsman. Then do so if they persist.
