yeah, getting rid of away would make the sentence more concise.

Having the word "away" in brackets isn't needed. I'd say you should either include the word (without brackets) or not put "away" in at all.

Get rid of 'away'. Fades means that something goes away so having away there is redundant and distracting. BTW, the only stupid questions are the ones that are not asked.

Well it would be better to have "The smile immediately fades away..." This gives the reader a better understanding of what happened even though both sentences refer to the same thing.
