A four wheel drive is more complex than a two wheel drive, and even if you don't use 4wd often there is additional maintenance to be done. That said, if you are using the vehicle off road, you might find a 4wd more suitable with more ground clearance etc and less likely to be damaged than using a 2wd vehicle?

Yes... both in fuel cost and in maintenance. A 4x4 truck is more expensive to operate, BUT... I grew up on a farm in the Midwest USA. We had rain in the summer and snow in the winter and there were times that a 4x4 pickup truck would have come in handy when dealing with the various weather conditions.

This is just my opinion but I would think that having a 4 wheel drive & never having to use it is better than not having a 4 wheel drive & needing it sometime.

The 4 wheel drive has an extra diferantial and a transfercase the extra cost of the 4 wheel drive option will be way more then the maintance costs of the system. However their are a few factors to consider. You are much more likely to get stuck in a 4wheel drive truck that is in 2wd then a truck that is just 2wd. The 4wd truck will use more gas! If you ever find your self in need of 4wd it will be nice to have. IMO if you don't need 4wd don't get it! it will cost more, use more gas and trust me if you have it you will use it! in mud the extra weight of the 4wd is what makes you need it so if you don't need it save yourself the money.
