We memorise the individual elements of the designs, certain shapes of flowers, petals, leaves, shapes to fill areas, borders, dots etc, for Indian, Arabic and North African styles. For some work I draw up a design in advance, for example if a bride want's something specific, then I copy the design on to her. Doing big events and fairs I tend to take a design book for people to flick through, but for the most part I tend to make it up as I go. It's fun and means you aren't doing the same thing over and over again, and you can tailor the design to the person.
