We refer to it as though it were a colour and, for all practical purposes it is. In reality, we see blackness when all the light striking an area is absorbed. Black is the complete absence of direct or reflected light so it cannot possibly be an actual colour. It is the total absence of colour. It is the total absorption of all wavelengths of visible light. We do not see pure blackness, we only see its boundaries. We see black things where the material of which they are made reflects light or we see light reflected from a shiny surface. So, strictly, black is neither a colour nor a shade though it in convenient to think of it as a colour.
