As long as you're not getting sick I guess it's ok. How big is the container for it to have lasted so long?

Some cheese is meant to be aged, so cheese is different from milk. If no one is getting sick, then you're golden.

Parmesan cheese is very dry, especially the stuff you buy in a container. Dry things don't spoil. And that stuff in a can, which is not genuine Parmesan anyway, may even have preservatives in it. Also, don't believe all the best by dates you read. Manufacturers are often obliged by government rules to put a date on things that really don't have any expiry date if they are kept in the right conditions. I can't imagine, however, that your five year old cheese has much taste to it. Even less than it started with, I mean.
