Out Of State Wedding?

Hire a wedding planner in the state your wedding will be in. A wedding planner in your home state won't have the relationships with local vendors that someone in the other state will. A planner in your home state will also have to travel to your wedding site at least once, probably more than once, which is incredibly inconvenient and will probably increase the cost of hiring the wedding planner. I would imagine most wedding planners would expect you to compensate them for their travel costs, if they were willing to travel at all. Like I said, definitely hire a local planner in the state in which you plan on getting married. It makes everything a lot easier.

You need to hire someone who has a working relationship with the local vendors. That means hiring a planner who is in the place you will get married, since they may actually need to check on things before you get there. They are your local representative.
