only use live view when the camera is on a tripod

Look in your manual - the function you want is called Live view.

Well . . . the best way is to read your camera user manual - it tells you how to use live view mode. BTW it's not a good idea. It's best to use the camera the way it was designed to be used - by looking through the viewfinder. If you don't want to do that, you've bought the wrong camera - you should have bought a point and shoot.
