The original occupants of North and South America were from north eastern Asia, they entered by a land bridge about 16,000 years ago. Their descendants became native Americans, north and south, of various shades of brown, none as black as Africans. Note that many Americans are confused about colour - they call Obama 'black', but he is pale brown. Indeed many millions of Africans were brought in slavery to the Americas and to the Caribbean in the last 500 years and some retain their very dark shade of brown usually referred to as 'black'. That slave trade started just a few years after the discovery of the New World by Columbus, and its subsequent over-running by white Europeans.

African slaves were sold by African rulers to the slave traders.......and the slave trade happened 50 years BEFORE colonization of Africa. Europeans brought Africans to the New World( Americas) . There were no Africans ( blacks) in the Western Hemisphere before the slave trade started Original settlers of the Americas were Native American/First Nations/Carib/Arawak/Inca/Aztec etc etc etc....generally known as Indians....or 'Red' Indians to distinguish them from Indians in South Asia.
Answer #9 | 20/12 2013 11:12
Native/Original Americans were Indians. I've read that the original inhabitants of North America, came across the Bering Straights from Russia into what is Alaska now, down through the now Canada and into the whole Northen Hemisphere, and were call "indians"---maybe people thought that they were originally from India??? Being dark skinned.

The first Native Americans to encounter Europeans were the Beothuk Tribe of Newfoundland in Canada. They and their Nieghbours had a custom whereby the Warriors covered their faces and upper body in Red Ochre, and wore this daily. That encounter is how the now obsolete term "Red Indians" came into being.
