Look at consumers reports at your library. Any car dealer will say theirs is great. After checking CR, look for some present owners of that vehicle, and quiz them about what they like or dont like about their car.

I would agree with others about Honda. Suzuki and Mazda are good too. Personally I have a Skoda which has been totally reliable for four years now but don't know whether they are sold in the States.

Toyota & Honda What's funny are the ford adds comparing themselves to Toyota for reliability. You can also find reliability data on the web

Right now I think Mazda products are the best buy. Because you are looking for a new car, I don't need to add the reservation about R (rotary) models. But the key is to check Consumers Reports and not just the new car reviews. Look at reliability issues for them as used cars. The other factor in over all cost often ignored is insurance costs! Some cars that cost very close to the same amount can have vastly different insurance rates!
