That's a really good question, and without posting any additional information, you will never find an answer!

For XP do this: Start> my computer> right click 'c' drive> properties> tools> error check: here check both boxes, then OK. The next time you cold boot your system, this process will run (maybe 10-60 minutes or more) fixing disk errors (if any). Later versions are similar. Word of caution: Check disk examines the hard drive platters for physical blemishes, and migrates data to fresh sectors when failure is indicated. If a sector fails, it becomes unreadable...which may cause any number of problems in the OS or reading data. Since you never did this (XP was not automatic doing this), there might be uncorrectable problems that have developed. Back up all data BEFORE you attempt this process!! It sometimes pushes the drive 'over the edge' and total failure has been known to happen. (That's why Microsoft moved it to an automatic process in later OS's; too many folks lost their XP files.)
