if it's not damaged, he will put it back in.

Over an extended period of time (read that as years) I've had two gold crowns replaced, by the same dentist, and for me the procedure, in both cases, was to clean the crown, clean, dry and then sterilize the affected area on the tooth, apply a fast drying dental adhesive, replace the crown, apply pressure to the replaced crown for about a minute, clean off the tooth to remove stray adhesive, finished. In both cases the total elapsed time was less than ten minutes. (No needles, no numbing, no inadvertent damage to the gums.)
