As you know all diesel engines need to have their fuel filters changed often. Possibly the intake manifold heater or glow plugs are not working. Believe it or not if you spray common W-D-40 in the intake manifold, diesels start easier in cold weather without the hammering and pounding of starter fluid. It appears Ryde, On is another of the long list of Yahoo Non-mechanics. When did they start installing spark plugs in a Cat Diesel?

Diesel engines that turn over generally won't start for one of three reasons. 1. Fuel problems ( water in fuel, not getting fuel to cylinders, old fuel, clogged filter, vapor-locked ) 2. Engine-shutoff switch malfunction ( sometimes, the switch gets caught in the "off" position. This malfunction often occurs with "choke-style" plunger switches and electronic remote-control switches) 3. Bad compression in the cylinders ( god forbid) in this case the engine requires a partial rebuild which is expensive, but less than the cost of a replacement and rebuilt diesel engines usually function for decades after being rebuilt. This should be a last resort.

Check for fuel ,,,, check for spark . Any easy test is to shoot some starter spray in the intake . If it starts that tells you there is spark . O.K. Check for ignition ,,,, feel better ?
