It only focuses sideways???? I don't have any clue what that could mean.

What autofocus mode have you selected? See page 81 of your manual on how to select an autofocus mode. If necessary, download a manual from Canon. http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300004730/02/eosrt3-eos1100d-im2-c-en.pdf

Did you set the camera/lens to MF (away from AF) before you started turning the focus ring on your lens? If not, the AF motor linkage or the AF motor itself is damaged. Digital AF is silky smooth (as compared to the cheesy feeling you get with old manual film lenses). If it felt like tiny teeth were gritting each other while manually focusing then that's the AF motor and links being broken. This is an issue with older camera and lens models.

Make sure you have selected to correct autofocus point.
