Have you thought about getting medical help? They have professional people that can help you with your social anxiety disorder. I'm shy too. But it's not as bad as you. Sometimes, I get a new haircut and put on better clothes. It makes me feel more confident in public. That helps a lot too.

Sure, lots of people get anxious and nervous in social situations. The trick is to not let your nerves STOP you from going ahead with your plans. If you let your nerves control you, you'll end up stuck inside your house, never going outside, and won't know what year it is for a decade. I would recommend that you talk to a school or local counselor who deals with anxiety. It sounds like the amount of tension in your home has made it difficult for you to learn to deal with regular day to day situations, which is not your fault - but which is something you can and should correct. While you live at home, you're kind of at the mercy of those around you and how they raise you. But you're older now, and know this isn't normal. That's a great start! Now just start to seek the help you need maybe through therapy or even through anxiety medication to help you through the rough part, and most of all, don't be afraid to talk to people about it. Maybe not your family, but if you get invited somewhere, just tell them, "I get pretty nervous in social situations, it would help if you could come with me or pick me up" (or whatever). You'd be surprised how many people can relate to that, and would also be willing to help you. Don't be afraid to open up, and above all, don't let your nerves STOP you. Work through it, little by little, and it will get better.

It sounds like you are suffering from agoraphobia which is a mental disorder that can be treated. I suggest you seek medical help to try and overcome certain situations that may be holding you back. Good luck!

This is a weird answer to give, but I had a similar problem when I was younger and we tried everything to make my anxiety go away (I was like 3rd grade) eventually we went to the natural health food store and looked in the supplement isle. There we found some anxiety drops, they had some sort of calming less anxious effect. I took them once a day, and when I would get that anxious feeling it went away soon after and now I am although not social, very outgoing, love to do public speaking and no longer take the drops. If I can find the name of what I took I will PM it to you but I would suggest the naturopathic way.
