Which fabric are you sewing. Is it a thick fabric that is more than your machine can deal with. If the machine did not work you should take it back to the shop where you bought it. If it was a faulty machine they could exchange it or show you what was wrong if it was some little thing that you were doing. All those things you did rarely need doing to an older much used machine. They are sort of things that when done by a newbee can be replace wrongly and you doing it may have invalidated the guarantee. If you haven't put the bits back properly you will have made more problems that were not there in the first place. Don't touch anything else. Take it back to the shop and confess.
