I don't think there would be that great a difference in calories burned although it would depend on your running speed. The 30 minutes of straight running would certainly elevate our metabolism and burn off more calories if you are running at a decent speed such as 8 minutes per mile or faster.

I believe it would be better to keep your heart rate in the "fat burning zone" for a longer period of time (30 mins) than to slow it down and speed it back up. If you're referring to "side fat" as the side of your belly fat, then the article I added to the source should help. Running isn't always the best way to loose fat. Running is good to burn calories in order to create a caloric deficit, but working on the area you are trying to sculpt will aid too.

Alternating between running and walking is the best option. It's called HIIT-High Intensity Interval Training and will keep your heart rate up and in turn burn more calories. You would have to run for hours to burn the same amount of calories as you could doing HIIT and lifting weights.
