It was once a business of sorts back when the general purpose domains were restricted to .com, .edu, and .org. This created a very limited supply of good domain names in a rapidly growing field of communications. As such, people/companies once bought large numbers of domain names either to reserve them for future use, or in hope that they will eventually get lucky with one of them when another person/company would be willing to buy it. However, with the expansion of top-level domains, this has become less of an issue. It should also be noted that people have found creative ways with getting around. For example, the creator of the game "Papers, Please" registered the site "papersplea.se" instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_top-level_domain
