That's a pretty broad question. Most packaged curricula have placement tests per subject, and it pretty much just evaluated what level you'd buy *of that program* for your kid. For an overall idea of where the kid is academically, you might try a standardized test (Stanford-10, ITBS), but those rely on "standard" curricula, too. My kid did horribly on the social studies section, for example, because I do history differently than most schools. So when they asked him questions about the effect of railroads in United States during the 1860s, he had no idea. If they'd asked him about the Battle of Hastings or the Great London Fire, he'd have nailed it. So take those differences into account as well. Sometimes the scores are useful (hey, you need to teach formal punctuation!), and sometimes they're not (let's test the kid on material he never saw!).
