No, what we commonly refer to as a "gasoline engine" or a "diesel engine" are both are internal combustion engines with a specific compression ratios. This type of engine must be designed to the characteristics of the intended fuel. Even flex fuel vehicles are designed with only one compression ratio. Both gasoline and diesel fuels could however be used in a steam engine or other type of external combustion engine. Steam cars of the past commonly used gasoline but were not considered "gasoline engines."
