Very. But it's still not "Safe" in modern terms. The R4 was designed in the 1950s, and the R5 in the very early 1970s. The Mk2 R5 was the better one, and notoriously stronger, but still not "great" by today's standards..

It is "safer than nothing", though both are rather old - R4 (the "nothing" in terms of safety) from the 1950s, R5 from the 1970s. By modern standards, both can be considered unsafe beyond any doubt, yet there are many still serving faithfully, burning gas by the drop counter and providing unparalleled reliability and performance-to-cost ratios. R4, along with the Citroen 2CV and VW (old) Beetle are one of the few cars that survived from the 2WW into our era. Not many can boast that kind of achievement.
