The UK flag is the Union Jack. Your husband might be interpreting this as Union vs. Confederacy, e.g., US Civil War. The UK Union Jack isn't relevant to that.

The Union Jack is made up of three flags. The Flag of England (St George's Cross), the Flag of Scotland (St Andrew's Cross), and the (Northern) Irish Flag (St Patrick's Cross). Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland. As such, St Patrick's Cross would not be included in a British flag. The Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom. There are just a few others that can be listed. If you are interested, follow the link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_flags Somebody who was somewhat intelligent decided not to add the Flag of Wales. I doubt too many would want a big dragon on top of the Union Jack.
