Never heard of the SSAT Most US universities require all students to submit a SAT or ACT score to apply So no it is not just for nice nice private schools

I went to private school. Honestly, for both the SSAT and SAT, trying to memorize vocab is impossible. It will ultimately come down to what you know, and SAT words are far harder than SSAT words are. You don't need to learn roots and prefixes. It will ask you for the definition of a word like "Incite", and list four or five possible answers to choose from. As a college student, I am helping my sister apply to prep schools, and when I looked at her book I knew every vocab word. Seriously though, you can study just as well by reading a few novels.
