Upload file to VirusTotal for a Virus check http://www.virustotal.com/ VirusTotal Scans with up to 51 different antivirus softwares and Malwarebytes

First, make sure your antivirus signatures are up to date, then right click the file and select the "Scan for viruses" option. Unless the software has a zero-day vulnerability (it's a new virus that has not been officially detected and contained by AV companies) the AV scan should detect any potential threat.

yes, an it's much easier than finding out you did install a virus and trying to remove it :-) There are plenty free virus scanners out there and you shouldn't be on the internet if you don't have one installed. Go check out http://ninite.com and download e.g. Avira or Avast, 2 of the best free anti virus software. Never install multiple antivirus software on your PC, choose one and stick with it. Running more than one can slow down your system very heavily and cause problems. Make sure you set it to update automatically and check for new updates at least once a day if you're on the internet all the time.
