Well the second gen series (1995 & up) are all good cars depending on the driver. But if I were you I'd get the 1995 4g63 turbo second gen it pushes 210 horse power looks great style and stock so I would really recommend it I have the 1st gen 195 horse power turbo so look into some see what suits you oh btw they come 5 speed standard transmission.

More then likely a good majority of those cars have been abused. They aren't bad cars as long as you take care of them. Depending where you live especially winter regions. Those cars are just rust buckets waiting to happen. Most common is the strut tower rust. The 4G63 would be the better engine choice that is in the GST and GSX but parts do get pretty expensive. The 420A motor I really have no clue about which is in the RS and GS. Since you want something reliable with good gas this would be the way to go. Depending on the price your best bet is find yourself a Acura RSX base model or Type S. Fast, Sporty, and better on gas.

Mitsu Motors has been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for the last like five YEARS. The only thing keeping them afloat is big direct $$$ handouts from the Japanese government. Best keep looking .....
