Avoid small policemen - they are not good for any sort of drivers. A Mini COOPER might be an option - nice little cars - but fairly high powered, so the insurance will cost a lot for a new driver: reckon on at least £5,000 per year.

Insurance will be crippling. Consider a Citroen C1. Perfect first car.

NO ! Far too expensive to insure, and you may well prang it anyway because it is quite powerful. Get a car that's cheap to buy, run and and insure, something pretty anonymous that wouldn't even tempt a car thief. A little Honda, Nissan or Toyota would be just he job, cheap and reliable. Before you get a sporty car wait a few years and the insurance cost will drop to a level that's affordable.
