I manage 2 companies through Quickbooks and both companies share a CPA that comes in once a quarter to evaluate government tax items, and end of year wrap up calculations. I never went to college for any of this, I taught myself, through the " help " menu and online forums. I was only hired because both the owners are too busy to sit down and keep track of paper work and answer phone calls, they're always at job sites and trying to keep their business rolling. But both the owners use Quickbooks Mobile to write up work orders and invoices right through their smart phones onsite, they even have their entire customer database right there in the mobile app as well, should they need any customer information, it's right in their pocket. Yes, the program itself is expensive, but once you start working with it, that one time fee for some software vs a weekly salary, plus payroll taxes, vacation time, bonuses, office equipment, uniforms, making sure the person who you hire is responsible to show up on time every day, someone you trust to keep your business information secure... it could be a headache. Good Luck.

I saw a question asking "Whether we should hire an accountant or use some software?". The best answer was "When you are sick, you visit a doctor or use a software to help you?" So, hiring an accountant is always a good idea whether its a small business or a big business. Remember, hiring an accountant and bookkeeper won't only help you with tax management and savings but a lot more than that.

You should look into QuickBooks. It is super easy to learn and even easier to use if you maintain it properly. The initial purchase price is expensive, but it will save you a boat load in fees to an account and book keeper.

i say, hire a CPA before a bookkeeper. a CPA will setup QuickBooks or a software solution for you to record your own transactions. when you get to a point that you need to focus on your strength as a business owner, then you can hire a bookkeeper to perfect recording the transactions. remember: a bookkeeper saves you money by recording the transactions correctly throughout the year so that when you prepare your taxes you're not spending CPA fees to organize your info. i would never own a business without engaging in business with a tax professional, aka a CPA. it's imperative.
