I know that the symptoms can be temporarily relieved by surgery, but I don't know if they can be fixed 100%. My brother has severe TMJ to the point of getting lockjaw. He ended up getting a special mouthpiece made for a few thousand dollars. He had to wear it for a few months and he said it really did help quite a bit. He also had to limit his intake of chewy, sticky foods (steak, gum, etc.).
