There is a good expat forum that you should start with http://www.englishforum.ch The Swiss pay federal and cantonal tax. Federal tax is about 20% and your cantonal tax is going to depend on the canton you chose. Take a look at the map, there are some pretty lakeside towns near Geneva that are in the next door canton and you will pay less tax. I think Geneva's cantonal tax is the highest in the country. Here is a handy calculator to play with http://www.homegate.ch/finance/calculators/tax-calculator;HGSESSIONID=sslXPVMKb1hb2YMvtGnnlnLl4whv5bxNt7GrPQ5T6rk5VPMtFRyd!872869503?a=default&l=default&level4= You do not have to live in Switzerland, it is definitely possible to cross the border daily but you are not going to save money. Swiss rents are like Swiss taxes. Amazingly low for anyone from the UK but the Swiss complain anyway. You become a protected tenant as soon as you sign a lease and the landlord is only able to increase your rent by a fixed amount so the longer you stay, the cheaper it gets. Again, take a look outside Geneva especially if you have a family. Lausanne has some wonderful properties.
