I always remembered that the open end of sign was aimed toward the larger number. Then read left to right. 14>8 is read as "Fourteen is greater than eight."

Less than (<) Greater than (>) The word' less' comes before(left) 'than' so the shape of the symbol shows a lesser area(shape) to the left with a greater area to the right. Conversely. The word' greater' comes before(left) 'than' so the shape of the symbol shows a greater area(shape) to the left with a lesser area to the right.
