It is a quadratic equation in y. Use the quadratic formula. (There are two solutions for each value of x.) y^2 -3y -2x = 0 y = (3 ±√(9 +8x))/2 . . . . use the quadratic formula to solve for y There will only be real solutions for values of x ≥ -9/8.
