Electromagnetic bells have iron striker that is attracted to the electromagnet and strikes the bell. As the striker moves towards the bell, the contact is broken and electricity stops flowing through the coil which loses its magnetism. The spring then returns the striker to its initial position which makes a new contact and so electricity flows again. This cycle repeats itself and the bell will continue to ring so long as the switch is held closed.

The typical electric bell works by powering a coil with electricity. It becomes a magnet attracting a rod with a striker that hits the bell. The rod also acts as part of the circuit to power the coil so as the rod moves to strike the bell it disconnects the circuit. The rod falls back to its original position. The circuit is complete and the process continues until power to the circuit is disconnected. Doorbells work in a similar way but sometimes do not repeat as quickly:
