There are two different pieces of hardware: a modem, a router. A modem converts the signal from your ISP to a normal ethernet signal usable by your computer. A router is used typically to share that single connection from the modem with multiple computing devices at your location. You can use any router with any service but you can only use certain modems with any given service provider and frequently the modem has to be registered with the ISP. You need to be clear on which device you are dealing with. Your best bet would be to contact your CenturyLink support and have them help you get things setup and configured. That is what they get paid to do.
