If it is caked on gunk, I would try a steel wool or maybe spray with an oven cleaner - if it would not damage any finish, but then, it's looking pretty ugly with all that built up grease on it, right? But with my $5 collection of cheap pots and pans, I'm not really going to worry about it. If I can't get them clean with oven cleaner, I'll just go to wally world and buy another.

Wash it.

I have an electric cooker, so if I get cooked food stuck in the pan I pour a small amount of water in the pan then leave it on the cooker hob (switched off). The residual heat from the hob warms the water and soaks into the stuck on food.

Use Easy Off oven cleaner spray, give it some time to do it's magic but it works great.

It depends what the pan is made out of.

I use either comet or babo cleanser or an SOS pad to scour the bottoms of kettles or fry pans.
