Hold the ball in the outermost segments of all five fingers, almost in your fingertips. Your hand should be mostly below the ball, but it can also be somewhat to the side of the ball.

Cradle the ball in your hand like you're holding an egg. Keep your elbow locked and raise your arm at a quick and steady pace. You won't actually be "tossing the ball" as much as releasing it into the air. This is considered the hardest stroke in tennis and takes a great deal of practice.
