Get a compression test done first, before you decide to do this.

Usually around $1000 up if you do it yourself and $3000 to $6000 if someone else does it. PS, If treated right you can get double that out of the engine. I got over 500,000 miles on mine and it still runs like new. That's an 1985 VW Golf. I am not sure if newer VWs last as long as the old ones but I think they should.

I can only speak from experience in the UK, the rebuild would cost more than the price difference between a high and a low-mileage car, and everything else (transmission, suspension, steering, brakes, interior, electric accessories like windows, locks and seats) will be worn out too.
