weights make it harder so you will build more muscle, but if your goal is to get a six pack or even just a toned stomach, you should incorporate some other exercises besides just sit-ups. Do some leg lifts, bicycle crunches, planks, oblique crunches, etc. The variety will keep it from getting boring and will target more muscle groups and get you more for your time and effort.
