Depends completely on the card. Some will close the account after 9 months of inactivity, especially if you have never used the card. Others take longer.

It depends upon the card. One card that I have had through various bank mergers since college suddenly charged me an annual fee when I had not used it for over a year (normally there was no fee). And because I was not expecting any charges on that account, I did not notice that until the following month when they tacked on a late fee. So if you have a credit card and you want to keep it active and free of an annual fee, you should use it occasionally for something you will pay off in full when the bill comes.
