The device consists of two parts, the modem and the router. The modem takes the signals on the phone line and converts it to 8 wire Ethernet. Inside the box, the Ethernet port on the modem is connected internally to a port on the router. The router is a traffic cop, directing traffic at what is equivalent to a 5 way intersection. 1 internal port to the modem and 4 ports are on the back that hook to your devices. Think of a 5 pointed star with the traffic cop at the center directing traffic. The modem is on one point (which goes to the DSL line) with the other 4 available for your computers.
