There are several ways antibiotics work, depending on the antibiotic. Importantly, though, different antibiotics work against different bacteria, and you need to take the full course of antibiotics for it to work. And no antibiotic is effective against viruses. For that reason, it is highly inadvisable to take antibiotics unless you have been diagnosed with something and prescribed them by a doctor. In the situation you describe, it is highly unlikely that you were infected in the first place, and taking an antibiotic would not have done anything. Unnecessary use of antibiotics like this can contribute to antibiotic resistance, which is a major public health issue.
