Infective endocarditis can - and does - cause death so it always needs to be taken seriously. It can also cause damage to heart valves etc necessitating surgery to put right the problem. While a lot of the old beliefs about the need for prophilactic antibiotics have now been dropped, it is still very important that anyone with endocarditis starts on suitable antibiotics (usually initially via an IV either at home or in hospital) asap.

It can be lethal. It's severity is independent of symptoms, but there will usually be symptoms of infection. It will need treating with broad-spectrum antibiotics. It is the inner lining of the heart that is infected - the endocardium, not the epicardium/pericardium @ Budda http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endocarditis
