"external stereo mini-pin jack (3.5mm diameter)" from http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25478/D5100.html You just need any microphone with a cord possibly an adapter, but 3.5mm is fairly standard in microphones.

There are two ways. If the camera has a mic input hole then you plug the mic there and let the camera record audio together with the audio. If none, you use a digital audio recorder that has that mic input hole then merge the video and audio in the computer.
