Ask the local police to see if anyone reported a theift of that Make and Model. Many older dirt-bikes did not come with a 'title' just a Bill of Sale either from a dealer or a private seller.

The same as any motorized vehicle. If you are trying to buy it ask to see the title from the seller. If they are unwilling or unable to produce it then it probably is stolen. Even if it isn't it would be far too much hassle to register it, walk away.

Take the VIN to the police, they can check and see if there is record of theft.

VIN check to police may help if reported stolen. depending on state and age of cycle, unlikely to have a title as a 'dirt bike' that never had a license plate issued for road use and a title connected to license plate.

The seller wont have any title with the VIN on it. If he says it's lost, don't believe it.
